CENTENARY YEAR
MEMBERS’ COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL
2021 was the Club’s Centenary year, and this auspicious milestone was marked with the issue of a Commemorative Centenary medal. Initially, this medal will not be offered for sale to non-members, the intention being to award a medal to each person who was a member of the club during the centenary year. The medal is shown below.
BILL BARRELL COMES TO TORQUAY
To help celebrate the Centenary, the club collaborated with the well-known philatelic dealer, Bill Barrell, to host an edition of the new “Bill Barrell Roadshow” at St. Michael’s Church Hall, Chudleigh Road, Kingsteignton TQ12 3JU. This is our regular meeting venue, and the Roadshow will start at 7:00pm for 7:30pm, on 14th October 2021. This was an unmissable event, at which Bill presented his display entitled “Great Britain Postal History 1584 to 1840 and the Penny value 1840 to 1880”. This is a superb, International award winning exhibit, with many rarities (when did you last see postal history from the 1580s?). He also brought along some of his excellent stock of material for sale to members, and many were delighted to pick up some tremendous new material for their collections.
SOUVENIR COMMEMORATIVE ITEMS
The club produced the souvenir commemorative items shown below: –
One hundred individually numbered and signed (by our President) covers were hand-struck with a specially made datestamp. The first 50 numbered covers carry a specially printed “Boots” label to mark our Centenary, and the second 50 carry a First Class Penny Black facsimile, issued in June 2020 to mark the 180th anniversary of the Penny Black, in souvenir sheets of 25.
The remaining unsold items were given a new look for the 2023 Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, held in Torquay, and many have already been sold, but some cover still remain. We’ll shortly be adding a new page to cover the recent Congress, and the Club’s contribution to it.
Covers are priced at £10 and £5 respectively. All covers contain an insert with brief details of the Club and its history. Also available are 50 specially printed, but mint, “Boots” labels. Each of these items is for sale to non-members, and our preference is to sell in sets of three, for £23, with all proceeds going to support the Torquay & Teignbridge Stamp Club.
- Cover with “Boots” label £10
- Cover with “Penny black” £5
- Mint unused “Boots” label £8 (i.e. not on a cover)
A “set” of all three items is £23 (available from the secretary)
Come along to a club night, or visit the Stamp Fair on Wed. 27th October at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School (details below) where the club will have a stand. Or simply e-mail dave.cleaver@btopenworld.com for details of how to purchase.
